PANCHKULA: Finally waking up from deep slumber, Panchkula administration and other authorities concerned have started taking action against illegal religious structures in the town. The Times of India had earlier highlighted how public property was being encroached upon for religious structures. Recently the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had demolished five illegal religious structures on NH-73 from Panchkula to Yamunanagar and on NH-21 from Panchkula to Kalka. There were 17 encroachments over HUDA land by religious bodies in Panchkula. HUDA administrator Surjeet Singh said that they have sent notices to those who have encroached upon HUDA land and seven have filed their replies as well. A “meeting has been called to discuss the matter and soon decision will be taken regarding the encroachments,” he added. There are a total of 29 encroachments by religious bodies in Panchkula city. Meanwhile, Panchkula deputy commissioner Ashima Brar said that the district administration had recently held a meeting with all the departments concerned whose land had been encroached by various religious bodies. “We are working on those reports and all the departments are framing their policy to deal with these illegal structures,” she added. She further added that the administration has also formed a committee to look into the matter concerning demolition, regularization and reallocation of these structure. Last year the Supreme Court had ordered a ban on unauthorized religious structures on public land. The apex court’s September 29 order put the onus of preventing new unauthorized construction on public land on the chief secretaries of states and union territories. In their reply, the state governments had stated that they were dealing on a case to case basis. The government’s affidavit had said that to prevent such fresh constructions, the district magistrates would be made responsible as per the court’s orders Read more: Finally, action against illegal religious structures – The Times of India http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/Finally-action-against-illegal-religious-structures/articleshow/6654580.cms#ixzz10zuqCqMn
