TPC moots ‘Green belts’ to give lifeline for trees in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rampant tree felling in city has prompted the Tree Protection Committee (TPC) led by mayor K Chandrika to re-examine all the 50 applications for axing trees in the city on the pretext of development. The TPC members, including officials of social forestry department, have rejected three applications and warned of stringent action against illegal felling of trees. TPC members Sugathakumari, K Udayan Nair, Sreedhar Radhakrishnan and R Ajayan have also sought the government and district administration to declare areas in the city as ‘Green Belts’ and make them protected zones to prevent frequent felling of trees.
